Far Cry 5 Review

In a continuation of the franchise, Far Cry 5 decided it was time to head home, well sort of. Instead of fighting self imposed Warlords or crazy mercs, Far Cry 5 decided to take a spin on the generally insane American Cult. So the question is… does Far Cry 5 deliver or does it drink the “Grape Soda”?

Story

In Far Cry 5, you take on the role of a Hope County Deputy serving an arrest warrant for Joseph Seed, supposed preacher and Cult leader of Eden’s Gate. During your arrest of Seed, everything goes wrong as his fanatics attack you causing you to have an “accident”. Which sends you on a glorious romp throughout Hope County taking down The Cult with the help of residents tired of their religion. From the minute you begin this game all the way to the end, Far Cry 5 continues to do the one thing that you’d expect from them, take you on a wild ride and not let you go until it comes into the station. Whether you are completing parts of the main story, liberating outposts, working on side quests or even taking in some hunting, fishing or sight-seeing; far Cry 5 delivers on every aspect.

The most interesting part of far Cry 5 is the open ended campaign, meaning after you complete the tutorial mission, you can go anywhere you want. Normally in games like this, it  could be a bad thing, but with all the side missions and random activities to keep you busy, the team did a great job of keeping you focused (especially me). Because, let’s face it, every so often you need to do a little river fishing.

Since Far Cry 3 (to some known as the best in the series), Far Cry 5’s story is a great adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat, even when fishing.

With that, I give the story a 9.5 out of 10.

Graphics

If Far Cry has always done something right, some would say it is in it’s presentation. When it comes to the graphics of Far Cry, this would be up there in comparison to what you would see from Square Enix in a Final Fantasy game or more recently in Horizon: Zero Dawn. Everything with in the game world is visually stunning from massive explosions in the distance to the splashing of fish in the water. In fact you would think that they spent time in Montana (hmmm….), but the team did an amazing job of capturing the beauty of Montana and when played on a PS4 pro or Xbox One X, the realism is astonishing.

However, just like in all games of this size, there are going to be some issues. Clipping of characters, wildlife, and scenery happen from time to time which if you are immersed in the game, can take you away from it. Also playing on PS4, some of the characters animations still don’t quite look right. But regardless of a few minor issues, Far Cry 5 is a visually stunning entry that captures the beauty of Montana and the viciousness that Far Cry fans know and love.

I give the graphics a 9 out of 10.

Gameplay

When it comes to the gameplay, Far Cry has usually had good luck when it comes to how it handles and Far Cry 5 is no exception. The team did an amazing job making everything from the weapons to the vehicles feel unique to where firing a 44 caliber revolver has a different kick than say the 1911 and a pickup truck accelerates slower than say a muscle car. My only issue is with the A.I. At times they can be intelligent but in other instances, they portray themselves in a idiotic fashion. But these minor issues do not drag the overall experience down in any way to give what could be the smoothest gameplay entry in the entire franchise. For that,

I give the gameplay a 9 out of 10.

Final

Far Cry 5 is an amazing addition to a historic franchise, where bringing the war close to home has been a bittersweet ride and a proven success. Regardless of the similarities that some people have presented of current events, Far Cry 5 gives the players exactly what they want, an enjoyable title, another bad guy to hate and the ability to lay back and do a little fishing. For that,

I give Far Cry 5 a 9.2 out of 10.
