If you’ve been paying attention to gaming news for the past year, it’s a good bet that you heard about cross platform play possibly becoming a reality. Rocket League developer Psyonix touted that they had found out about how to make cross platform play a reality. Sadly, it was quashed before it took off or could be seriously tested.
That was the last time it was truly in the mainstream spotlight. Well, it looks like it is back and this time it was an accident? Yes and no. It appears that Fortnite actually had a line of code in the game that allowed players on PS4 and Xbox One to be able to play against each other. How is this possible? According to Pretty Good Gaming, a player on PS4 noticed an unusual gamer tag that isn’t allowed as a gamer tag. After some impressive sleuthing, he had discovered that he was playing with a gamer from Xbox. After this was discovered, it was quickly patched up and deemed “an accident”. It is interesting to note that Xbox’s Phil Spencer is all about cross platform play, even going as far as saying that games should be on all platforms and let the players choose what system they want to play on. Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t see it that way and they won’t say why. In my opinion, I would have to say that since Sony and Playstation has been hacked multiple times, which would be why they are hesitant in promoting cross platform play.
If this “accident” was an actual test of cross platform play, it would stand to say that if the developers would host their own games, then cross platform play could become a reality.
