Destiny 2 Beta Impressions

“Here we go again.”

If you are loving Destiny 2’s beta, this is your only warning to walk away. Still here? Good because lets talk about the beta. First of all I would like to commend Bungie on actually getting this game to the people when they actually said they would however as I have stated before during our podcast, Bungie is being rushed into making this game by Activision which brought some reservations to me about if this game would live up to what it should be. Long story short, I may have been right.

However, for what I was able to play which was the first mission “Homecoming” which should take you into the next moments after The Taken King endgame. But I will skip to the beginning of the mission which for the most part was not a horrible narrative but you are left to navigate and fight the Cabal while the story is continued via voice and does give use an insight into what a crisis would look like. Unfortunately while you are running this mission, there are instances where the next objective would state “go this way” or “continue ahead” which when you are trying to understand what’s going on they do an ‘amazing’ job of continuing the story. Now the actual mission is only about 20 minutes long so it appears that Bungie has not learned how to make an engaging story.

After you complete the mission, you are then allowed to access the strike “The Inverted Spire” which takes you to Nessus where the Cabal are unearthing an old Vex weapon, however you move in to stop them before you are tasked with destroying an Atheon looking Vex Minotaur in which the battle ensues. Much like the story, the strike does an even worse job of conveying the message of whats going on, There was no opening dialogue on what was going on or what they should be doing, giving a small cutscene of whats going on (let’s face it, an in-game cutscene wouldn’t be that hard). And again, there were instances where your next objective would be “go over there” or “head straight” which when you are trying to immerse the players into the story, Bungie is failing at it.

When it comes to the controls, Bungie is still keeping true to its gameplay mechanics which was a nice thing to have. However, the weapons felt lacking in both strength and feel. In one example, the Scout Rifle the Titan carries feels more like a 50 cal rifle being fired by a 12 year old and doesn’t do as nearly as much damage as a rare Scout Rifle from the original (btw, the Scout Rifle was legendary rarity).

The last item I would like to say is that with about a month and a half left before this game is going gold, Bungie is failing at giving the players (or at least a majority of players) what they really wanted was CONTENT. When a game gets a beta, you need to show players what your game is capable of and Bungie’s Destiny 2 doesn’t even come close. Maybe I am holding the beta in high regards and just wanted to find something wrong, but I really did want this to wow me into thinking I was wrong. This beta just didn’t give me any hope that Destiny 2 was going to be the saving grace that would revive the franchise.

I will still give this game a rent or 2 to complete the story and review it for you but in no way was I given a reason to full out buy this game. If you are playing the beta right now and you ether agree or disagree, head over to our facebook page and send me a message.
