Not to long ago, we were all talking about PubG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) and how it was dominating the newly revitalized Battle Royale game mode. During that time there was one game that everyone (at the time) dismissed, and that game was Fornite: Battle Royale. Here’s the kicker about it, Fornite: Battle Royale was not the actual game. In fact, Fornite’s main game is a PvE horde mode game where you are task with surviving waves of enemies while building defensive structures to protect a valuable item.
What could be the reason for all the success? Since PubG is only on Xbox and PC, Fortnite: Battle Royale is on all 3 platforms. It also has much to do with the fact that it is 100% FREE to play (minus the microtransactions) on all the platforms and unlike PubG, this game is family friendly. I know that some people will take notice that it is a shooter which I am not arguing, but it’s the fact that there isn’t any blood or guts that go flying around. It is also a good note that the game was designed to look goofy compared to the realism of PubG.
In fact, Fornite: Battle Royale has moved even farther than anyone expected. This past week, they decided to put out a Beta of the game mode onto mobile devices and in a matter of hours, Fornite: Battle Royale surpassed any other mobile game on IOS in 13 countries. Although PubG has come to mobile devices; it is Fortnite that has the better control mechanics and with that it is apparent Fortnite is the clear winner.
But let’s look at some other numbers, as of January 2018, Fornite has 45 million players with 3 million concurrent (active) players while PubG sports 30 million players with 2.9 million concurrent players. Since January, PubG has been seeing a decline in player base, but Fornite still continues to bring in new players.
OK with all the boring information out of the way, what makes this game so much fun? The one major thing that sticks out is the overall goofy look to the game. The team at Epic Games made something that every gamer could enjoy. It may also have to do with the overzealous & goofy weapons or the biggest factor is, building. Something that many games of the same can’t or don’t do is the Minecraft mechanic. Harvesting materials and building unusual towers and forts to defend all the while watching the clock and player count dwindle quickly, and when that clock counts down, the area to play in shrinks. Leading to you (as the player) to rethink your strategies and begin moving deeper into the circle.
So how is that fun? Don’t really know to be honest with you and i am sure there are gamers out there that will tell you the same thing. But the one thing that I can say that makes this game at least entertaining (because I get smoked all the time) is the overall colorful look of the game, it’s easy to learn how to play (literally 5 minutes to learn) and it doesn’t seem to suffer from alot of the same lag and loading issues that plagues rival PubG.
So if you are a casual PvP player (like me), Fortnite: Battle Royale is a low risk game that carries a FREE price tag which makes it a great game to pick up and play whenever you want without the huge commitment of a $$$ game.
