This past weekend I was given the opportunity to play the closed beta for Ghost Recon: Wildlands. With that I have some positives and some negatives about what I had access to. But first things first, for those who have been living under a rock or just didn’t care about GRW, here’s a little something about the game. The game takes place in Bolivia where you (as a member of the Ghosts) are sent into the country to help bring down the Santa Blanca Cartel. As you begin moving through the vast country, Ubisoft has given you one thing… the freedom to play the game you want. Which is a great concept because let’s face it, your not gonna be linear when taking down a cartel. Sounds like a concept right?
Well yes and no. However I don’t want to give to much away yet. Let’s get back to what this article is about. The closed beta gave us access to one small area of the map to play in with a couple of story and side missions to play. You begin the beta by creating your own Ghost which although limited in options, was robust enough to create a somewhat unique character. After you create your character, you are being transported into Bolivia with the strict mission of dismantling the Cartel.
Lets get to a few of the positives in the beta. The level of detail that the team at Ubisoft put into Ghost Recon Wildlands is impressive with trees moving when a helicopter whizzes by, to crawling through tall grass to get to your target and with the limited space we were given access to, I cannot wait to see what the world has in-store. Another major positive was the customization options you have for your character are numerous from tattoos to hats and much like with The Division, Ghost Recon Wildlands has the same options as the former which when in the middle of a firefight; you probably not gonna care that your hat is blue instead of red. With the customization options comes another huge plus and that is the gunsmith. For those unfamiliar with the gunsmith system, this system allows you to modify everything from the scopes to stocks to even the paint on your magazine, the gunsmith is a huge addition that will give everyone who plays there own unique weapon that someone else may not have.
Now with so many positives, what could possibly be the negatives. Well, actually other than the fact that the cars drove ridiculously slow (I mean your grandma would tell them to speed up) I was really unable to find any truly horrible issues that would hinder the game. But if the cars are like that when its released, then someone over there needs to hit a few times with a large hammer.
Ghost Recon: Wildlands releases on March 17, 2017 for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
